It is increasingly clear to me that society and specifically students do not understand copyright law. But more importantly, students do not value it. They do not see that they are impacting the
creative work of an individual and his/her ability to continue that creative process. At the same time technology is making is easier and easier to duplicate copyrighted work and may ultimately mean
a change to very nature of how copyrighted work is paid for and distributed. My experience is that we need to lay out the issues and laws and then let students decide for themselves the impact that
it will have on them and how they behave. It is also clear that they are shepards of future creative work and would benefit from considering those issues. It is my hope that you will leave this
session with the tools to begin to discuss these issues with your students.
